We spoke with a few mindful dads at the Muse HQ about how their connection with mindfulness improves their lives as fathers and here’s what they had to say:
Dan is the manager of the Customer Care team at Muse. He is currently a father of one, and expecting his second child shortly!
Q: What is your favourite part about being a father?
A: My favourite part about being a father is that I can always be there for my son. In his eyes, there is nothing that I can’t fix. He thinks I can do everything, which inspires me to try to do everything. The fact that I have somebody looking up to me like that makes me want to be the best version of myself.
Q: Why Muse?
A: I choose to work at Muse because we are impacting people’s lives. In my current role at Muse, I get to hear real stories from real people every day.
I know that I am helping to bring meditation to the masses and that makes such a positive difference in people’s lives. I am not just doing a job, I am a part of something larger. Since being with Muse, I am far more mindful of ensuring I put forth a good and calming influence.
Q: Do you have a personal meditation practice and if so, why?
A: Yes I do! I like to meditate before going to sleep. Taking the time to practice focused attention with Muse clears out my day’s thoughts and the worries of tomorrow. Ultimately, meditation helps me to be present for my son – which benefits both of us!
Q: How were you introduced to meditation?
A: I started with meditation right before my son was born. Meditation definitely helped me when he was born. It helped me to make sure I was taking care of myself – getting sleep, being in the moment and enjoying those early days.
I learned to be mindful, which helped both my wife and I solidify routines. We were both pretty aware of when the other needed rest. Without meditation, I do not know if we would have been able to be so mindful of each other, ourselves, and our newborn.
Cliff is a QA Analyst at Muse HQ. He is a father of two little ones.
Q: What is your favourite part about being a father?
A: My favourite part about fatherhood would have to be the lifestyle. Although completely different from how I thought I would spend my days, living life around the needs of my children is very fulfilling.
I used to have a pretty regular schedule, and now my schedule can be very unpredictable. This has helped me to realize that although difficult, I AM capable of fitting self-care, the care of my wife, and the care of my children into each and every day.
Q: What is your personal meditation practice like?
A: I fit meditation in whenever I can. My favourite time to meditate would have to be beside my sleeping newborn baby. Having my sleeping baby beside me is so calming. My practice helps me to reset and then re-enter the business of being a father in a calmer and more productive state.
Q: What began your meditation journey?
A: I actually experienced meditation for the first time as a part of my culture growing up. I used to think of meditation in relation to the Kung Fu Masters I looked up to. I used to think only the masters could meditate effectively.
When I was a teenager, I deepened my knowledge about meditation and mindfulness through the novels I would read and the movies I would watch. Although I knew a little more about meditation, the fact that I didn’t know if I was doing it right stunted my motivation to practice and I gave up.
When I began working for Muse, I learned about what meditation really could be, and from then on, I have been working on my practice.
Martin is the Digital Marketing Director at Muse HQ. Martin is a father to 2 daughters.
Q: What is your favourite part about being a father?
A: My favourite part about being a father is watching my daughters gain new experiences through fresh eyes. Their curiosity and interest in the world inspires me to be more present during tasks or situations that would usually be routine.
Q: Why Muse?
A: I choose to work at Muse because I learn new things every single day. I learn to be more present which carries into how I act with my daughters, I am constantly reaching to be more creative and more mindful in my work, and I learn so much from my coworkers.
I don’t think I would be able to say any of that if I wasn’t working in a place that encouraged mindfulness and personal growth as much as the Muse company culture does.
Q: Do you have a personal meditation practice?
A: I do. I like to use my Muse 2 first thing every morning for 10 minutes. My favourite experience is the Heart experience. Waking up each day is much easier knowing that I can look forward to taking a little bit of time to focus on myself.
