Here’s our next post from Paul Dewland, seasoned professional golf and mental coach from Core Golf Academy! Below, he writes about one of the most important skills that pro-golfers need; the ability to remain calm no matter their score.

One of my favorite things about Muse is how it can accelerate the development of a really important skill in golf: the ability to quickly detach from the outcome of a shot, a hole or a round.

This is extremely important in professional golf, but is also a vital life skill. If a player hits a good or bad shot, either can trigger different emotions like anger or excitement. It’s natural to react to the outcome, but processing those feelings for prolonged periods while in play leads to real problems. While this is a normal phenomenon, it interferes with our ability to make good decisions and to make good use of our skills. It can also be true in other areas such as business, parenting, and relationships.

Professional golfers tend to play their best when they feel calm. Feeling relaxed is different from feeling calm. One of the key characteristics of a calm person is the ability to control where they place their attention. They will most often hold it in the present moment, keeping them focused on the task at hand, despite what is happening around them or in the past.

This is what Muse helps with. It is the perfect system to develop the strength of our attention control kind of like building a muscle by working it in the gym. In a Muse session, the wind blowing strongly mimics the psychological effect of a bad outcome in golf. Likewise, when you earn a period of quiet or the birds chirp, that’s analogous to what happens in the mind as a result of a good shot or outcome. Getting excited or upset about either for more than a short moment will ironically, invite the sound of waves once again. So Muse lets you learn to quickly separate yourself from these fleeting emotions and keep your attention centered on the task at hand whether it’s focusing on your breath during a Muse session or ignoring distractions on the course.

This skill is the basis of resilience or toughness, and can bring about incredible performance states. Every single true professional I have ever met in any field – fully possesses it. The good news, is that every one of us can develop and deepen this skill with practice – and Muse accelerates this development in the most simple, convenient and enjoyable way that I know of.
